When it was over Wednesday, the absence of Christ the King’s Bria Smith was more glaring than the absence of Nazareth coach Apache Paschall. With Christ the King missing its best player, Nazareth – in its first season in the CHSAA’s Brooklyn/Queens division – routed the Royals, 45-33, to end their 27-year regular season league championship streak.
The game, played at St. Francis Prep, was an unprecedented tie-breaker after the teams split a pair of earlier games and finished with identical league records. With Paschall out serving a suspension, and playing without freshman Bianca Cuevas, Nazareth (22-3, 14-1 CHSAA) led by as many as 23 points and earned the top seed for the upcoming Brooklyn/Queens ‘AA’ state tournament. Christ the King (18-7, 13-2) will be the No. 2 seed.
Paschall, suspended by his school for speaking about an ongoing league investigation into his alleged recruiting practices, was on the minds of his players, who dedicated the victory to him.
“We felt we had to win this game for him,” said Nazareth’s Darius Falk, who had 10 points. “What happened to him really motivated us a lot. He told us to play hard. We’ve been talking to him on the phone. He’s been giving us advice.
“We just feel that everyone is out to get us,” Falk added. “It’s always a war between us and Christ the King.”
It was more like a water fight, with Christ the King’s primary weapon, Smith – a McDonald’s All-American – missing her third straight game with a bruised left knee. Christ the King coach Bob Mackey said it was his decision to hold her out to save her for the playoffs.
The Virginia-bound Smith said she is scheduled to see her physician on Monday and expects to be cleared to return next week. The Brooklyn/Queens Division I quarterfinals start Tuesday.
“This really has no relevance for us,” Mackey said of the Royals’ remarkable run of titles. “Streaks are meant to be broken. It’s not really a big deal. You just go back and try to start another streak.”
Paschall is being investigated by the CHSAA for recruiting violations stemming from a Daily News report in November that detailed his persuading players to follow him to Nazareth after his former school, St. Michael’s Academy, closed in June.
After speaking out, Paschall was barred from attending practice for a week and will also miss his team’s Brooklyn/Queens quarterfinal match on Tuesday.
