On the night he was betrayed, Jesus took time to spend with his apostles for the Passover meal. Steeped in a long history each Spring children, usually around age 7, receive the Sacrament of Communion for the first time. From that point forward parents, up until their child is old enough themselves, are encouraged to take their child to receive Communion as often as possible.

For a child to receive Communion for the first time, the child must be baptized. If the child is over the age of 4 but has not been baptized the child may be placed in the children’s RCIA program at which point the child would receive the Sacrament of Communion but also they would receive Baptism as well as confirmation. This is a very common thing for families who do not have their child baptized as infant. In the first century however the baptisms were celebrated with adults and it was not changed to baptizing infants until the 15th century.

As every Catholic Boy and Girl knows First Holy Communion is a big even in their lives. In the more modern times it has become a time for celebration, Communion Dresses, and parties. Usually on this day the family and the godparents gather with the child to celebrate.

This is a story of a Filipino Woman-of-Substance. She was my Mother.

We were a Migrant Family who moved out, in Yr 1953, of rural agricultural Mindanao to re-settle in urban Manila City, Philippines. I am the eldest of 7 Children – 4 Brothers and 3 Sisters. Unfortunately, my youngest Brother died as a Child – in a swiming accident in the City. As Father’ health was never good in the City, he would frequently re-visit his hometown rural Cebu where he died at an early age of 48 years old.

Mama struggled on with life, all by herself, to feed her 6 growing-up children, and to pay the high cost of quality education for all her children. As strangers in the City and with no relatives to depend upon, Mama secured for her brood a 1-unit, low-cost, long-term, lease-to-own, 2-bedroom bungalow in a Gov’t-owned Housing Project. For many years, we had to survive by Mama’s low Salary Income as a Gov’t Employee. When each of us graduated from College, one after another, she continued on living a Life-of-Purpose – by building a respectable 2-storey Residential House, by extending financial assistance to her Sisters-in-Need residing in the province, and by securing a Family Burial Lot in a well-planned Privately-owned Memorial Cemetery. Mama died at the old age of 84 years old.

Mama was a Catholic. As a bright young girl studying at Sta Teresa Academy (Cebu), she learned her Catholic Faith taught by the Missionary Belgian Sisters at that time. She recognized JESUS as her personal Savior – and Redeemer of the World. She willingly offered all her day-to-day sacrifices upon the Altar-of-the-Lord. And Sunday would be the Lord’s Day.

She insisted that all of us would walk all together to church for Sunday Mass. Our neighbors would jokingly liken us to a train. Holy Week was observed with confessions, fasting and abstinence. The Dawn Mass on Resurrection Sunday was celebrated in ecstacy. As Christmas was always celebrated with the longest period of joy, I once asked Mother which event would be the most important. Her quick reply was: “Resurrecion Sunday. If CHRIST did not rise from the dead (as he had promised) then JESUS could NOT have been our Savior. Our sacrifices in Life would then have no meaning as there would be no AfterLife in the Kingdom of God.” Mama was a Catholic Teacher-of-Life – and she continues to enlighten and to inspire me as she is now in heaven.

Growing Up

It’s a funny thing about growing up Catholic. You learn your Baltimore Catechism, so you know the rules. You go to Sunday Mass, and learn quite a few prayers and songs. If you’re an altar boy (as I was) you get to understand the Mass pretty well.

Many of us drift away in our young lives, and many make their way back to the Church. We feel special. After all, there are something like 1.5 billion of us around the globe, we have the Pope as our spiritual leader, a man respected by world leaders everywhere. We must be blessed.

Many of us, though, don’t know anywhere near as much about the teachings of the Bible as our counterparts in other Christian faiths.

How Can That Be?

We go to Sunday Mass every week. But it lasts only an hour, has a limited number of readings included and even those are in a rotation that repeats a lot of the same readings year over year. Daily Mass offers a little more exposure to Scripture, but very few people attend and it’s still not enough.

As anyone who has invested time in Bible study will tell you, there’s an awful lot of information in those Books. Amazing stories, important teachings, a few conflicts and lots of food for thought and reflection.

Personal Responsibility

We need to take it on ourselves to read the Bible, to participate in Bible study with others, to talk with other Catholics and non-Catholics about what we learn, what we believe, and the things we struggle with as we try to live our faith.

I wish I had figured this out earlier in life, but the good news is it’s never too late for the Good News.

The gathering song is sung by everyone. The Liturgy of the Word is given. They first read scriptures from the book of Old Testament and this the 1st reading. Then, a responsorial Psalm is read or can be sung.

The 2nd reading is from the New Testament followed by the gospel acclamation (This is usually sung). The gospel reading and homily are followed after gospel acclamation.

The rite for the marriage is read, when everyone stands before the priest. The priest asks few questions about their faithfulness to each other, the acceptance of both, and about the upbringing of the children. Then the bride and the groom exchange vows. All the priests bless them. They exchange the wedding rings, which are blessed and given to them.

Liturgy of Eucharist is preceded. They sing hymns while preparing the altar. Gifts are presented and the Eucharistic prayer follows.

The Holy Communion and the nuptial blessing are given. The concluding rite is the final blessings given to everyone present in the Catholic wedding ceremony. Reception and introduction of the wedded couple takes place followed by feast.
